Sukhothai was the 14th Century Capital City of Thailand, during this period Thai Buddhism was closely associated with Sri Lankan Buddhism and the Sukhothai Style is very similar to Sri Lankan Statues of this period.
The head of the Buddha represents knowledge. The large lump on the head, known as the Ushnisha, represents the wisdom and knowledge that the Buddha gains after attaining the enlightenment. The urna, a round tuft of hair between the eyebrows signifys the supernatural vision of Buddha. The short and curled hair on the Buddha head indicates the nobility of Buddha. The flame represents the enlightenment of the Buddha.
This statue was hand cast with bronze using the 'Lost Wax Method', the traditional way of casting statues. With lost wax castings each statue is slightly different, this means that you have a unique work of art and not a mass produced souvenir.
